🌐 Our Digital Backbone: MoLeNet

To turn data into impact, AIR4LIFE is built on a powerful digital foundation: the MoLeNet platformhttps://molenet.org

MoLeNet (Modular Low-cost Environmental Sensor Network) is an open-source, community-driven platform for environmental monitoring, developed by the University of Bremen. It provides a scalable, flexible, and cost-effective system for deploying and managing IoT-based environmental sensors—the very core of AIR4LIFE’s smart air quality infrastructure.

💡 Why MoLeNet?

AIR4LIFE seeks to democratize environmental data—to make it accessible, reliable, and actionable, even in low-resource settings. MoLeNet allows us to do just that.

  • Modular and adaptable: MoLeNet supports a wide range of sensors—air pollution, temperature, humidity, particulate matter, and more—making it perfect for diverse environments from urban centers to rural villages.
  • Low-cost and open-source: The platform’s affordability and transparency align with AIR4LIFE’s vision of equitable innovation. Communities can build, deploy, and maintain their own sensors without relying on expensive proprietary systems.
  • Real-time monitoring: MoLeNet collects and displays real-time environmental data through an intuitive interface, enabling live feedback, public access, and community engagement.
  • Globally tested: Already deployed across Europe, Asia, and Africa, MoLeNet is a field-proven platform that brings both technical maturity and global relevance to the AIR4LIFE project.

🔧 How We’ll Use MoLeNet in AIR4LIFE

AIR4LIFE will use MoLeNet as the technical backbone for all sensor deployments and data collection efforts in Kenya and Germany.

  • Sensor Integration: Project partners will deploy MoLeNet-compatible air quality sensors in key locations—schools, hospitals, urban centers, and community spaces.
  • Community Engagement: Students and citizen scientists will be trained to use MoLeNet, allowing them to actively participate in environmental monitoring and data interpretation.
  • Research & Policy Support: Data from MoLeNet will feed into joint research studies, policy briefs, and public dashboards—transforming raw data into science-based policy advocacy.

🤝 Open Collaboration, Open Technology

MoLeNet exemplifies AIR4LIFE’s commitment to open collaboration and sustainable innovation. By using a shared, extensible platform, we ensure that the tools we build are:

  • Reusable across other cities, schools, and countries
  • Scalable to meet the evolving needs of environmental monitoring
  • Transparent for communities and researchers alike

Together with MoLeNet, AIR4LIFE is not only measuring pollution, we’re building a new model for community-powered environmental intelligence.
